ARCHITECTURAL HOME OF THE YEAR - INDONESIA
Project Description:
The project is located on an irregular urban site in Bandung, Indonesia. Lift House is conceived around a simple idea: it is not a living space with a garden, but a garden with a living space. The private area massing is lifted 5.2 metres above the ground, creating additional usable volume while allowing the lower level to become part of the garden. This creates a higher ceiling in the living area, making the space feel more open and placing it closer to the surrounding trees. It also maximises natural light and air circulation to reduce the use of lighting and air conditioning. The mezzanine becomes a transitional floor that connects the "garden space" to the private area on the upper level. The connection between the interior and garden is strengthened through large openings. TOSTEM's technology allowed the project to achieve four-metre-high openings, maintaining the intended proportions while reducing visual barriers. It’s also aligned with the railings of the mezzanine and windows, uniting the architecture and interior throughout the space. The glass openings bring natural light and views into the living spaces. When opened, the dialogue between the living area and garden becomes generous. Through its spatial strategy and choice of systems, Lift House demonstrates how a compact urban home can have living spaces that remain closely connected to nature.
